“What’s the best new car in the world right now?” – it’s a question that is often touted around the Petrol News office but it’s one that has been answered for us this week.
That’s because the Jaguar F-Pace has just been named World Car of the Year in New York during the Big Apple’s international motor show.
Jaguar’s first ever SUV faced down fierce competition from 23 other vehicles including finalists Audi Q5 and Volkswagen Tiguan to win the approval of a jury comprising 75 of the world’s most influential motoring writers.
Ahead of bagging the accolade, the F-Pace claimed the award for World Car Design of the Year.
Reacting to the win, Dr Ralf Speth, CEO of Jaguar Land Rover, said: “The F-Pace was designed and engineered as a performance SUV with exceptional dynamics, everyday usability and bold design.
“Winning these two awards endorses the talent and great work of our teams that have delivered the world’s most practical sports car and Jaguar's fastest selling vehicle.”
Previous winners of the World Car of the Year include Mazda’s MX-5 (2016) and Merc’s C-Class (2015), while VW has bagged the top prize four times since the award was introduced in 2005.
Other award categories included World Performance Car, topped by the Porsche Boxster Cayman, marking the fifth time the brand has triumphed in this group over its 13-year history.
To give you an idea of the award’s calibre, the Audi R8 Coupe won last time round and the Mercedes-Benz AMG GT before that.
Merc’s E-Class was declared 2017’s World Luxury Car, while Toyota’s Prius Prime was named World Green Car. The BMW i3 Range Extender claimed the inaugural World Urban Car prize, ahead of the Citroen C3 and Suzuki Ignis.
Stephen Hasley, brand manager at Petrol News, adds: “Jaguar has been on a bit of a winning streak of late, following the phenomenal F-Type and triumphant return to the compact exec market with the XE. It shouldn’t have been a surprise that they’ve managed to nail the perfect SUV first time of asking. Pat on the back for the big cat!”
