May 15, 2019driversclub

A poll of UK motorists has named the Lotus Elise as being their ‘icon of icons’, with the model receiving the Readers’ Champion award at the Autocar Awards 2019.

The Elise was named the winner in what was a highly competitive category, but blew away its competition with more than 25 per cent of the vote.

An icon of icons for car enthusiasts

Responding to the accolade, Mark Tisshaw, editor of Autocar, said: “Readers chose the Elise for its unwavering emphasis on driving factors: fine steering, handling and brakes made more effective by its compactness and light weight.

“For the record, we at Autocar enthusiastically applaud the decision.”

He went on to add the model won by “an overwhelming margin”, with readers demonstrating an unwavering appetite for pure driving machinery.

The award was presented at a gala awards ceremony earlier this month and was accepted by Lotus Cars’ design director Russell Carr and head of concepts Richard Rackham.

Lotus may have claimed the top spot in the poll, but 16 other iconic models were also highlighted in Autocar’s shortlist. These included the Nissan Skyline, Lotus Seven, BMW 3 Series, Fiat 500 and Porsche 911.

Jess Wort, marketing manager at Drivers Club News, comments: “The Lotus Elise is a motoring icon in every sense of the word. It’s fantastic to see this true great of our automotive history receive such thrilling recognition.”
