The history of contact lenses
Did you know, the story of the contact lens begins with one of the most famous inventors of all time Leonardo Da Vinci. In 1508, he wrote the ‘Codex of the Eye’. In his manuscript, Leonardo considered the possibility that submerging one’s head in a glass bowl of water could correct specific vision ailments!
Remarkably, da Vinci went on to create a glass lens with a large funnel on one side for pouring water into it. The invention proved to be highly impractical, and it soon became clear that the concept was too far ahead of its time.
No real solution came to light for more than 500 years although many tried with gemstones for magnification or actual glass on the eye. Until modern usage of hydrogels materials and later silicone came into practice. Now contact lenses are convenient to wear and move with the eyes to allow a natural field of vision. Contact lenses have been the choice for many for more than 60 years.
Unlike glasses, they do not fog up or get splattered by mud or rain. Contact lenses are excellent for sports and other physical activities. Plus, they are no longer a considerable expense, and online ordering has made them cheaper than ever. Daily disposables, once thought a costly option, is now available for under £1 a day from Lenstore!
Get the right contact lenses
If you already wear glasses, you’ll need a separate prescription for contact lenses. Contact lenses have other measurements such as diameter and base curve, for the perfect fit. Everyone’s eyes are unique, so a contact lens prescription ensures you have lenses which are comfortable and fit well.
As a dedicated customer of Lenstore, you can book a free eye test at Vision Express. They will be able to help identify if you’re currently wearing the right prescription for contacts. If you’re looking for optical advice, there’s an online optician ready to answer. Plus you can get free eye tests at a Vision Express store as a dedicated customer of Lenstore.
