Holiday picks for September
In Europe, visit Sofia in Bulgaria. It’s a town full of history, a crossroad of culture and religion and is more recently famous for its Urban Creatures Street Art.
If the natural landscape is more your thing, then take a trip to Germany and walk along the Moselsteig footpath that winds its way along the banks of the Moselle River.
Are you looking for culture? The Longyearbyen literature festival takes place from 2 to 6 September, in Svalbard, Norway. The authors and poets won’t be the only source of inspiration; the mountains and glacial waters are awe-inspiring too.
Are you seeking a warmer, Mediterranean destination? Albania has all the hallmarks of a beach holiday, without the crowds of sun-seeking tourists.
For food and drink fans, don’t miss the Oktoberfest in Breckenridge, Colorado on 6 to 8 September. This American town has deep Germanic roots, hence the celebrations at the base of the Rockies. The drinking festival is also celebrated in other American cities right up until 6 October.
Fly to China for the Mid-Autumn Festival
For September, Kiwi.com has some great price offers for destinations much further away. Such as China.
“Tian gao qi shuang” is what the locals will tell you about September in China: “the sky is high, and the air is fresh”.
Why not celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival? Chinese people hold this event in honour of the moon being at its fullest. This year, it will be on Friday, 13 September.
Lanterns will fly, some of them with riddles written on them for other people to guess the answers.
Moon cakes (a pastry filled with lotus-seed paste) are eaten in abundance, and the fact that the moon is at its fullest is supposed to represent pregnancy and a time for courtship. Indeed, many places throw parties and dances for young people to find partners; this is another example of the festival’s idea of togetherness.
Fly from 1 September from London to China one way from just £275. Offer ends on 20 September 2019.
